Film Openings

On Fridays lesson, our class watched some drama film openings to gather an understanding of different ways films are opened before starting our main task. From this, I could see that film openings such as The descendant and The age of adealine both started with voice overs setting the context, when Forrest Gump and The judge started off with dialogue instead.
Conventions to take note of

  • Shot sizes
  • Shot angles
  • Shot duration
  • Transitions and overall pace
  • Sound effects
  • Use of music
  • Title fonts and colour
  • Colour palette and lighting
  • Setting
  • Types of characters and their context
  • Story line/ plot development
  • Overall the mood/atmosphere
THE JUDGE:
  • Ambient sound
  • Close up on glasses
  • Slow fade outs
  • Depth of field - Flowers
  • Title - clear, white, all caps, traditional
  • Extreme long shot of city and high angle looking down at city
  • Music gets faster - busy scene with people walking quickly
  • Dialogue starts - over the shoulder shots
  • Cool lighting - bright
  • Colours - blue and bright

FORREST GUMP:
  • CGI - feather
  • continuous shot at the beginning
  • Old clothing and props
  • Slow music following feather sets a slow pace
  • Simple piano melody
  • Title - stands out
  • Warm pure colours
  • Setting in the city
  • Dialogue at the bus stop
  • Sets a happy tone overall

THE TIME TRAVELLERS WIFE:
  • Violin played over production title
  • Opera music
  • Set in the Christmas season with snow
  • Low key lighting
  • Sharp sounds - car crash
  • Yellow title represents warmth
  • Quick transitions
  • No extreme long shots
  • Camera focus - blurs into focus on the rain on the window
  • Shot sizes become longer after the crash and changes the mood quickly

THE DESCENDATS:
  • Medium close up of women
  • Sound - up beat musical instrument
  • Voice over narration of character speaking directly to audience

THE AGE OF ADEALINE:
  • extreme long shot - birds eye view
  • 3rd person narrative giving us an introduction to the character

  • character is intelligent and observant
